EDHEC Faculty makes an impact on Family Business Research

Florencio Lopez de Silanes is Professor of Finance and Law and Director of the Corporate Governance Research Programme at the EDHEC Business School. He has been actively involved in the EDHEC Family Business Centre, through his research contributions on major family business topics and teaching contributions on Family Business Governance and Financing Growth in the Family Business Global Executive MBA.

While his main research interests and publications fall in the areas of International Corporate Finance and Financial Markets, Legal Reform and Privatization, Professor Lopez de Silanes has particularly researched the family business arenas of performance, financial policies and succession challenges. In an article of the Journal of Finance dating back to 1999, he was amongst the first with his co-authors to show the importance and relevance of the family ownership structure in large corporations.

His research at the EDHEC Family Business Centre has also brought new light into the characteristics of family businesses in terms of performance, governance, managerial and succession practices. His latest publication, “The Transmission Challenge: what determines family business transmission?”, shows a significant correlation between the intergenerational succession rate of family businesses and the tax premium for succession worldwide.

Professor Lopez de Silanes will share insights from his studies at the EDHEC Family Business Centre in a presentation and a panel discussion at The Asia Pacific Family Office Conference, held in Hong Kong on 14-16 November.
