A new cohort of 13 PhD participants has embarked on the EDHEC doctoral programme and on 14 September 2020, the programme management was delighted to welcome them for their first week of core courses.

Be self-disciplined, devote time to your doctoral studies every week, focus on academic work, learn on existing knowledge and come up with ideas...” recommends the academic director Professor Raman Uppal to the newcomers.

Without interrupting their careers, the experienced practitioners of the executive track usually join the programme to take a step towards senior positions in finance or positions in academe, or when they already hold such positions, to help them steer their organisations in new directions. During the programme, they work with leading specialists on research of particular relevance to their organisations. The PhD in Finance programme at EDHEC requires a strong personal commitment and is designed to be completed over three years.

Out of the applicants matriculated this year, twelve of them are part of the programme’s executive track and one belongs to the residential track. This participant will work as teaching assistant, in the EDHEC Masters in Finance programme (Financial Economics Track) and will be based on the Nice campus.

This class still boasts great cultural diversity. Eleven nationalities are represented (Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, United Kingdom, United States of America); six students are based in Europe, three in the United States, two in Asia, one in Africa, and one in the Middle East.

Participants have solid professional and academic credentials. Some have  first degrees in economics, in business administration (major in Finance), or in accountancy. Others  have a first degree in mechanical engineering, in sciences (data and systems analysis, or informatics). Some of the participants  hold one or two graduate degrees or a CFA certificate: MSc degrees in applied economics, economics and finance, financial markets, quantitative finance, and statistics, MBA with major in finance, from reputed institutions such as Cambridge, Chicago, London School of Economics, Oxford…

In this cohort, there is a well-balanced proportion of senior professionals acting as head of units or CEO, and more junior profiles that include portfolio managers, or investment and risk specialists. Participants work in asset management, corporate and investment banking, in wealth management, financial services or consulting. The average age of these newcomers is 39 and together they average over 16 years of experience, and 700 of GMAT score.
